Vitiligo & the AtoBeam UV Irradiation Device

Warning: this is a long post.

This is more than just a product review—I want to share my experience with vitiligo, a skin pigmentation condition. I haven’t fully cured it yet, but I’m improving and getting closer to remission.

My Story

Four years ago, after giving birth, I had a sudden onset of full-body allergies—sometimes waking up in the middle of the night scratching uncontrollably. I even had to go to the emergency room! For two years, I had recurring allergic flareups; tests were done, but the cause remained a mystery. Then early in 2020, small patches of vitiligo appeared.

At first, the spots were the size of a soybean and showed up around my eyebrows, under my eyes, beside my nose, and along my cheeks—eventually growing to the size of five 500-won coins combined.

Some people said to me, "It's not that big," or "Others have it worse," but for me, it felt serious—especially because the spots were right on my face, a focal point of first impressions.

So, in 2020, I traveled back to Korea for excimer laser treatments and prescription creams. These halted the spread, but couldn’t shrink the white patches. Returning to France, I visited a dermatologist—no laser treatment was available. They simply recommended daily sunlight (avoiding peak UV times) and prescribed vitamin D supplements. After six months, the vitiligo didn’t spread further, but no significant improvements occurred either.

In May last year, I returned to Seoul and underwent SST (non-cultured melanocyte-keratinocyte transplantation) twice, one month apart. It was difficult to heal properly during the hot summer while wearing a mask, and I had to leave France soon after, so couldn’t get follow-up laser therapy. That’s when I decided to self-treat at home with the Atobeam 2 device.

My Current Treatment Routine

  1. SST melanocyte transplants – 2 sessions (Aug & Sept)
  2. AtoBeam 2 UV irradiation – twice per week
  3. SunDream vitamin D UV lamp – 30 minutes daily
  4. Vitamin C + D supplements daily
  5. Tanning supplement (commonly used in France) – taken for about 5 months
  6. Maintaining a positive mindset—I believe full remission is possible
  7. Time and patience—this is a slow process

After taking the tanning supplement, areas previously unaffected by UV started turning slightly red during AtoBeam sessions, indicating pigment return on previously white patches.

How I Use the Devices

  • Start low to avoid burns. First month: ~1 minute per session, then increase gradually.
  • I now use 400 seconds per session.
  • Do not work on consecutive days—wait at least 2 days between sessions.
  • Keep the lamp close to your skin, NOT far away.
  • Wear protective glasses or close your eyes during sessions.
  • I used socks to block unaffected skin from UV exposure.

Costs & Insurance

ItemCost (KRW)
SST Transplant 1 & 2 220,000 + 180,000
AtoBeam 2 UV Device 320,000–330,000 (discount)
Mini Vitamin D Lamp + stand 100,000 + 18,000
Vitamins C + D 25,000–30,000
Tanning Supplement 36,000

Treatments ran from August through February—about six months—and vitiligo is steadily shrinking. I truly believe I will achieve full remission.

Final Thoughts

Vitiligo’s cause is still unclear—likely autoimmune, driven by stress or weakened immunity. I personally experienced life-threatening childbirth and severe post-natal stress, followed by allergies and then vitiligo.

What I learned: no single treatment works alone. You need a combined approach, time, money, and most importantly—a positive mindset.

For anyone with vitiligo: stay strong. I will share healing photos once I'm fully recovered. This has been my mid-treatment update.
